Force1 F100GP Ghost Review

When welcoming someone into a hobby, how exactly do you get them started? For a select few, going balls to the wall and maximizing the experience by picking out the cream of the crop is the way to go.

This plan might backfire, though, as a total newbie can (and probably will) be overwhelmed at every chance they get.

In the drone flying hobby, this rings true as well.

So, as a general rule of thumb, most are initiated into the activity by way of the affordable route: cheap, toy-grade quadcopters that have the most basic of functions just to give them their first taste of remote, unmanned flight.

Such is the Force1 F100GP Ghost, an entry-level offering that is friendly to the pocket as it is to the total amateur. But what exactly does it have in store for our beginner buddies?

Find out in this extensive Force1 F100GP Ghost review.

Force1 F100GP Ghost Features

Brushless Motors

The Force1 F100GP Ghost packs four brushless motors for each of its propeller arms. This means that the drone has better control over its speed thanks to the efficiency offered by these motors.

Brushless motors are also inherently less noisy due to the almost-frictionless design of the mechanism. This also means less heat generated, equating to a longer service lifespan. Basically, what brushed motors have, their brushless cousins do better. Not too shabby to be outfitted on a beginner drone, right?

6-Axis Gyroscope

Apart from being an agile speedster in the air, this drone is equipped with an advanced 6-axis gyroscope that allows it to stay on the balls of its feet (or the tips of its wings, whichever’s convenient).

The basic 3-axis sensors of the drone are further enhanced by the additional, redundant modules that refine the drone’s maneuvering and automatic flight adjustment capabilities.

Altitude Hold

Whether you need to change positions, trying to gather your sense of direction, or simply scratch that irresistible itch on your back, this doesn’t let you down with its handy Altitude Hold function. With the simple press of a button, the drone automatically stops dead on its tracks mid-air, much like a handy parking feature for UAVs.

The craft does this by making use of its barometer that actively tracks changes in air pressure and automatically adjusting the drone’s altitude level based on the current data the sensors detect.

360° Flips

As appealing as it might be already, the drone takes it to another level with a party trick up its sleeve. The 360° functionality of this bird allows it to do complete barrel rolls in the air with just a flick of a switch.

The UAV is kept safe with the help of the 6-axis gyroscope, stabilizing the drone after performing the dizzying feat like it’s nobody’s business.

Battery Life

The Force1 F100GP Ghost comes with an 1800 mAh battery that provides up to 15 minutes of uninterrupted flight time, give and take. This is pretty decent, considering the price point the drone sits at, especially when compared with its contemporaries in the same bracket. This is taken to another level as the drone kit has a spare battery pack as well, effectively doubling your flight time.

While this is already a generous amount of juice for a beginner to be working on, no one’s stopping you from grabbing extra battery packs as they can be had for cheap online. This also ensures that you don’t have to constantly do runs for charging, as a bare minimum of two hours is needed to top these bad boys up to the full.

Camera

Surprisingly, there is a 1080p HD camera for its optics. This blows every other offering at this price point out the water, as most would struggle to offer a 720p camera at this price range, let alone full HD.

While not as clear or as vivid as 1080p cameras of drones at, say, the $100-$200 range, the F100GP Ghost’s own unit is quite capable of capturing details that can be missed by lower resolution cameras, along with a consistent performance that can be used for amateur content creation or just fun photography shoots.

Furthermore, the drone’s camera system is modular, meaning that you can outfit a different compatible camera on the craft — like some of the ever-popular GoPro units — enhancing your recording and capture capabilities on this budget bird.

Controller

Unlike most drones in this price bracket, the F100GP Ghost doesn’t opt for the gamer console controller design and instead goes for a more professional-looking route on this one.

While made of plastic, the controller has a premium feel to it. It has a balanced weight and comfortable ergonomics overall.

The arrangement of the controls on the remote is neat and well-populated, with the standard dual joysticks, sliders for trimming adjustments, function buttons, and shoulder triggers for speed toggling and camera capture modes.

Design and Build Quality

The Force1 F100GP Ghost takes some sort of sleek, alien-themed aesthetic with its thin but curvy body.

The drone comes in a durable construction as well, with the material used being better in quality than what you’d normally see with toy-grade drones. This makes it viable for a little bit of crashing, which is bound to happen sooner or later with a beginner at the helm.

Other extra protective features include propeller guards and slender landing legs that provide the needed allowance to protect the camera unit when attempting landing maneuvers. The legs can be removed to reduce weight as well, as the drone is a healthy 445 grams of flight tech and other stuff. We didn’t really see a difference in the flight time when you do remove the legs though, so there’s not much need to bother.

And oh, it comes with three different colored shells for the top hull, allowing you to switch colorways on the go, though we really like the classic black option better than anything else.

Performance

The Force1 F100GP Ghost isn’t the fastest bird out there, but its decent two-speed adjustable modes allow the pilot to switch between maneuverability and safety. The slower mode has all the control sensitivity dampened to allow for a better learning experience for novices, while the other mode has you on full throttle for more fun and versatility while in flight.

Since the Force1 F100GP Ghost is a considerably bulky drone, it’s not as safe to fly it indoors as it is outdoors. That being said, it can take a handful of rogue gales without buckling whatsoever, thanks to its hefty build. This means excellent stability for the UAV during normal operational conditions.

Response level is top-notch as well, as the drone performs every control input you do in real-time seamlessly. The 500-meter range is enough for most flying needs as well, though we’d recommend you keep your distance from the maximum limit to avoid losing the drone.

Final Thoughts

Wanna get into the drone hobby without spending a lot of hard-earned money? Sure, you can find a lot of UAVs that come dirt-cheap, but most of them are just total wastes, especially when you find out these birds can’t do the thing they were designed for in the first place: Fly. Properly.

The Force1 F100GP Ghost isn’t one of these bin-worthy birds, though, as it packs just the right stuff for the eager beaver awaiting its arrival. While no Headless Mode or One-Key Takeoff and landing is on this drone, the sheer stability and ease to maneuver make the craft a dream to fly.

So, it’s missing a couple of flight features that we find really useful for beginners — especially Headless Mode.

However, it does come with a capable 1080p camera, giving you video and photo capture abilities at a sub-$100 price range. We really can’t demand too much more at this point.

If you’re all about that bang for the buck, with the Force1 F100GP Ghost, you’re in luck.
